With school starting, many students enter the classroom without the basic necessities. Books, backpacks and pencils are often overlooked entering the new year. But thanks to the efforts of the Independent Riders, kids in Pelham will be heading to school ready to learn.
The Niagara-based bike club, whose focus dials in on helping out the community, brought in dozens of school supplies during their final ride night of the season at Iggy's Pub and Grill.
“Getting the backpacks and other school supplies hopefully will help some local students who may have been heading to the first day of school without pens or pencils,” Independent Rider Jay Mccollum said.
Often an overlooked aspect of what Pelham Care provides, donations during the start of the school year are vital. The simplest supplies – crayons, pens and pencils – are needed for children to continue their growth in school. Shortages in food stocks for child lunches are present, as they search for donations in pudding cups, fresh produce and sandwich bags.
This was the third year Independent Riders gathered supplies for students in Pelham as they continue to be major players in changing often unknown lives on a daily basis.
“We do rides and events throughout the year to raise money for charity with most of the donations headed for Pelham Cares,” Mccollum said. “It's tremendous to have so many riders who are willing to help out in the community. This is a great group of guys who actually care about others where they live.”
