Last May, the Purina Walk for Guide Dogs took place with the help of the Fabulous Fenwick Lions.
With walks going on across Canada, the event brought in a total of $1,163,843 for a very special cause.
The Purina Walk for Dog Guides is a national fundraising walk held in more than 200 communities across the country. It raises funds to help train Dog Guides for Canadians with visual, hearing, medical or physical disabilities.
Each Walk is organized by local volunteers with support from Lions Foundation of Canada.
To date, the Walk has raised more than $10 million.
Lion Ken Suthons, whose organized walks for the past several years, saw another impressive year in Fenwick, too.
The group raised nearly $5,000 in an event that has become a staple of a weekend filled with games, fireworks, and fun.
Since 1983, Lions Foundation of Canada has been providing specially trained Dog Guides to men, women and children from coast to coast.
All Dog Guides and required training, including transportation and accommodation, are provided at no cost to qualified applicants. The Lions Foundation does not receive any government funding and relies on the support of fundraising events like the Purina Walk for Dog Guide.
Suthons says they are hoping to make it bigger and better next year, as it is one of the simplest events to attend. Anyone with a furry friend can pick-up a pledge form beforehand and start collecting donations to help those in need.
With costs of guide dogs coming in often higher than buying a car, Suthons says the support of the community is essential in befitting the life of another individual.
“Most people don’t realize the costs of a guide dog,” Suthons said. “It’s a lifeline for those needing to get out of the house so we’d like to thank everyone that participated and donated to the dog walk event this year, making it a success.”
The next Purina Walk for Guide Dogs will take place again in May. For more information regarding the event and where the donations head into, visit www.purinawalkfordogguides.com.
