During a committee of the whole meeting Monday, Ward 2 Coun. Gary Accusi said there is a public safety question about the pedestrian signalized crosswalks along Pelham Street particularly at Church Hill and Pancake Lane.
It may be a “learning experience” for council, which approved the lights, he said.
Ward 2 Coun. Catherine King said she has a serious concern for the safety of pedestrians at Church Hill.
Drivers making a left turn off Church Hill cannot see the lights and will turn into crossing pedestrians.
Ward 3 Coun. John Durley was told about problems at Pancake and Spruceside. He suggested looking at turn lanes.
Similarly suggested in the discussion was converting the walker-activated lights to regular full traffic lights.
“We have a lot of tools in the tool box,” said Mayor Dave Augustyn about various suggestions for improving safety.
Chief administrative office Darren Ottaway said staff will bring back a report outlining options at council’s next meeting on Nov. 17.
