Christmas in Pelham, a two-month celebration of the holiday season, starts Wednesday evening (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.) with a stroll through Fonthill shops.
It continues the Holiday Gift Showcase at the “Shoppes of Ridgeville” Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
From Nov. 5 to Jan. 4, the Christmas in Pelham committee pulls together and promotes holiday related events throughout the town.
Originally, Christmas in Pelham was a weekend organized by the local business community to promote shopping in Pelham.
It has evolved into a wider town celebration that includes long-standing events such as Homes for the Holidays House Tour (Nov. 15), Pelham Community Food Drive (Dec. 6) the Kinsmen’s Seniors Christmas Dinner (Dec. 9), Santa Claus parade (Dec.13) in Fenwick and free skates at the Pelham Arena during the Christmas school break.
Similarly, tied in are Temperanceville Historic Display (Dec. 1 to Jan. 1), Carolling (Dec. 3 and Dec. 5) in Fonthill and Children’s Christmas Musical at Pelham Community Church and Fonthill Baptist Church (Dec. 13 and Dec. 14.)
Newer events are Christmas Light Displays and Competition from Dec. 1 to Jan. 1 along with Nordic walking with Santa (Dec. 11).
The town supplies staff to co-ordinate Christmas in Pelham and a $5,000 budget.
“These funds provide for community decorations including garland, wreaths and bows, entertainment, advertising and promotion and logistics,” said a report to town council Monday. The committee asks for donations to offset costs.
The Outdoor Christmas Market on Friday Dec. 5 is a major town event. Town council has applied for a special occasion liquor permit for the noon to midnight event.
It will temporarily close parts of Pelham Town Square and Pelham Street.
Outdoor Christmas Market will feature “local artisans and their seasonal offerings and local businesses offering seasonal food products and food” along with Christmas cheer.
Last year after a cold evening, it was tagged “Shiverfest.”
