A transformation to turn Sobeys of Fonthill into a state-of-the-art food retailer has beguns, says media relation representative Sarah Stover.

The store along Regional Road 20 began construction of an addition in early November.

Stover says the work will add another 10,000 square feet, with an emphasis on expanding the natural meats and cheese section of the store.

It will be similar in design to the Sobeys store located at 400 Scott St. in St. Catharines and will follow a “better food for all” theme.

Scheduled to be completed by June 2015, Stover says she is unaware if it will include new hires for the store.

“Right now, we know the Fonthill location will have lots more to offer then it currently has.” Sobeys will lose parking space, which has some residents concerned with the recent opening of the LCBO just meters away.

Stover says they will monitor the situation when the project nears its completion date.

Sobeys Inc is one of only two national grocery retailers in Canada. It serves the food shopping needs of Canadians with about 1,500 stores in all 10 provinces.

Its retail banners include Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Foodland, FreshCo, Price Chopper, Thrifty Foods and Lawtons Drugs, as well as more than 330 retail fuel locations.
