The town has put up five new light emitting diode (LED) street lamps along Effingham Street near Canboro Road to test their effectiveness.
Public works director Alan Mannell said the town does not have a plan to replace existing lights with LED ones in this year’s capital budget.
He was answering a question during a capital budget meeting Monday.
However, the town is testing them, he said, to see the public’s reaction.
The town has about 1,500 street lights.
LED lights cut energy costs by about a third, Mannell said. But their real advantage is reducing maintenance costs.
Right now public works staff repair lights every week, he said.
A whole new lighting system would come a period of maintenance guarantees.
