Staying physically fit is a challenge when students are balancing classes and other responsibilities. For Stuart McPherson’s Grade 8 class, it’s a part of the learning curve.
The students from Glynn A. Green Public School are once again are taking advantage of nearby Fonthill Fitness, to receive first-hand experience in a healthy fitness habit and how to do it safely.
“It’s our fourth-year running such a class and the response has been fantastic,”  McPherson said.
“We’re fortunate to be so close and that Mike [Browne] opens his doors for the kids too.”
Whether its Zumba or trying out weight lifting, McPherson says the kids are in the perfect environment to learn proper methods while trying something new.
“People seem to open up more when they are with friends and classmates,” he said, incorporating peer pressure into his teachings.
“It maybe not something they’d go out and do on their own, but in this setting, it’s perfect to try.”
Students from previous sessions still attend the gym, he says.
He can already see the interest growing in some of the students this year.
What amazes him the most, however, is the commitment from each student to the class. It is only possible if the class size is adequate and everyone agrees to participate.
So far, McPherson has been lucky, crediting the students for realizing the importance of fitness in everyday life.
“It’s not just about training for sports, it’s just helping create a better lifestyle and getting them active.”
