The time to renovate the Thorold Fonthill High School time capsule is now, says Trish Rybski.

A TFHS graduate and Pelham's Historical Society member told the society’s  monthly meeting Saturday fundraising efforts have begun to restore the stone structure in front of  Glynn A. Green.

“Like a number of the legacy projects created in 1967, the time capsule has crumbled over the years and the original points deteriorated and were removed due to problems cutting the grass.”

The original Centennial design, with triangles on each point to represent each province, is what the organization would like to re-create.

“The plan is to have it encapsulated with copper-lined lead,” Rybski said Saturday afternoon.

“Our plan is to construct the design over top of the original structure, creating a piece of landscape art and making it a focal point in the community.”

Thorold Fonthill, which operated from 1959 to 1970, had just 300 students when it closed. It later became Fonthill Senior School and then Glynn A. Green Public School.

Rybski is calling on all former alumni to help chip in and preserve the time capsule, a part of the town's history.

“We've got to preserve it for the next 45 years until it is opened.”

Thus far, they have raised more than $3,000 and are looking for funding opportunities from the province and the Town of Pelham in making the project possible.

Rybski says those who make a donation, will have their name on a plaque that will go in front of the time capsule.

“The time is now to help preserve a part of our history. We have a chance here to make the Thorold Fonthill High School a must-see spot for future generations.”
