The large trailer donated to the Fonthill Scouts has been put to good use, says assistant Scout leader Kevin Langelaan.
“It’s given us a lot more freedom in what we can do with the boys so we’re extremely grateful.”
The group received the trailer last September from the Mayor’s Gala fundraising efforts and quickly took it on the road. With the frigid winter months upon them, the Scouts have been able to venture out to Camp Wetaskiwin and work on their outdoor skills – all while keeping their equipment dry.
“Instead of taking numerous vehicles filled with camping equipment, we’re able to focus on the destination rather than how we would get everything to the site,” Langelaan said.
He says even the local Cubs organization have also borrowed the trailer, which allows a unique opportunity for kids to get involved with the outdoors.
“This is a nice option outside of sports for the boys to do,” Langelaan said, as many are working on their compass and mapping skills. “So many of them just want to get outside and explore. The trailer is going to go a long way in allowing our Scout group the chance to do that and get a first-hand experience with nature.”
The Fonthill Scouts meet every Wednesday at Fonthill United Church.
