The smell of barbecued ribs hung in the Centennial Park air last weekend for the Fabulous Fenwick Lions annual Ribfest.

It fed more than 140 people, and raised funds for organizations across Niagara and throughout Canada.

This year, part of them will go to a familiar face for many of the Lions.

In 2009, Faith Mepham, received her Special Skills Dog from Dog Guides Canada, with help from the money raised through Biketoberfest and other activities in Fenwick.

The dog, Bronwyn, helped Mepham with everyday living  until health concerns force the dog to retire.

Mepham, who had kept in contact with the Lions, was left without her lifeline. The  Lions extended a helping hand.

Lion Al Beamer says it was an easy decision with so much experience behind them.

“The costs really do add up,” Beamer said Saturday afternoon.

“The $1,500 she is looking to raise is to provide a personal support worker to accompany her when getting the dog.”

A potential new guide dog owner must spend two weeks at the facility to develop a one-on-one relationship. They learn to trust each other as well as accomplish everyday tasks.

Beamer says the dogs help to increase the mobility and self-confidence of people who face medical conditions every day. The canine companion brings comfort to their human companion that they will never “walk alone.”

“Every year we try and help out with the program. It seems so simple yet it changes the lives of so many people and that’s why we’d like to help Mepham out in her time of need.”

Normally, the Fenwick Lions send new members to Oakville to watch each canine graduate the program.

Beamer says often there is not a dry eye in the crowd with much work coming from every direction.

Trainers, dog sitters, Lions and the new owners share a bond – like the one  formed during the two weeks by Mepham and her companion  dog.

“It feels great knowing you are helping someone else live a better life by doing simple events like these.

“It’s not only us helping out, but it’s the entire community who comes to these events to help turn someone’s world turn upside down.” Those wishing to donate can go to www.gofundme.com/m2gslo. If you would like to donate but wish to do so in person, contact the Fenwick Lions at 905-892-6661.
