A spectacular season came to an end for the E.L. Crossley girls volleyball team after they were knocked out by the powerhouse Eden Flyers last Thursday in SOSSA action.
Coaches Michelle Gibson and Jessica Kropac were proud of the girls, who dominated high schools throughout the season, never losing a set and finishing as Zone 3 champions. The team also won gold at the Governor Simcoe tournament and received silver at a tournament held at Eden.
Eden turned out to be the teams kryptonite – handing the girls their only two losses of the season.
Team captain Kylie Butler says despite the loss, the girls played their hearts out. She credits the success to chemistry between the girls on the floor.
“We all get along really well. Most of us had played together for four years, so that really helped right out of the gate,” Butler, who will be graduating in June, said.
With five other seniors on the team, a new roster will be formed next year. However, Butler believes the team can have the same success as this years team produced.
“The girls who are younger are really talented,” she said. “They got to learn a lot this year so they’ll be ready to step into the seniors shoes next year.”
Kropac agreed, saying although the loss was tough, it was a building block to reaching the ultimate goal of competing at OFSAA.
“While we are sad about the loss this year, we have several strong returning players and are already thinking forward for next year.”
Team members include Kylie Butler, Kylie Fast, Kenz Deamude, Leah Domenagato, Lisa Gearing, Mackenzie Glenney, Cassie Osterlund, Hailey Purbs, Edith Turpel, Kelsey Van Alstine, Talli Williams, Erica Wilson and Holli Zwierschke.
