On Sunday, April 26th Mathew Bradbury and Alex Pascoe will be hosting a cycling and awareness event at Pelham Friends Church at 940 Haist Street. The event will consist of a lunch and information session from 12:00-1:00 pm followed by a bike ride from 1:00-4:00 pm. The event is being organized as a precursor to the ‘7 Days in May’ ride to cure pancreatic cancer.

Alex, a 20-year-old baker’s apprentice, lost her mother to pancreatic cancer and hopes to use the event to raise awareness about a disease that is often left out of the public spotlight. “It’s very close to my heart, having lost my mom,” she said. “Even though pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of death among cancers, a lot of the funding, awareness, and research efforts are focused in other areas. So it’s good to get out there and raise awareness about the disease.”

Following the lunch and information session, riders will then be able to partake in either a 10k casual loop or the full 68km ride that will follow a scenic but challenging route throughout the region. The event is free, and Matthew and Alex hope it will encourage riders to take part in the official ‘7 Days’ event, which offers cyclists a chance to ride the coast of Lake Ontario. Last year, Alex and her friend Jesse Farr, who rode the entire circuit, raised over $1200 dollars, with 100% of the monies going toward pancreatic cancer research.

“Everyone is welcome to come out,” said Mathew. “It will be a great ride for avid cyclists, and also a great way to learn about this cause.”
