Anglers of all ages were out over the weekend to take part in the opening of trout season at St. Johns Conservation Area. The ceremonial first cast took place at noon on Saturday, and the park remained a very popular spot throughout the weekend.

The St. Johns Conservation area is known for its excellent and accessible hiking trails that run amidst a deciduous/ Carolinian forest that is unique to the region. While many individuals and families were enjoying these trails on Saturday and Sunday, the majority of patrons were hooked on the fishing, trying their hand with everything from hard tackle to corn.

Ten-year-old Daniel Noble was one of dozens of young fishermen working the water, and was excited to get out and try some of the lures that he had hand-tied over the last few months. “He spent all winter reading and practicing techniques,” said his mother. Residents of Niagara Falls, both she and Daniel are frequent visitors to the park.

Noah Clark and Will McNabb were also out over the weekend looking for tight lines. The boys hadn’t caught much in their first twenty minutes, but neither one was discouraged. Noah fishes the area often and loves any chance to cast a line out. “He loves fishing,’ said Noah’s mother. “If there’s a body of water, he’ll throw in a line and try to catch something.”

All three boys plan to spend a good deal of time at St. Johns over the coming months, enjoying the scenery and looking to land the big one.
