Meaghan Gizuk and her husband Trevor have been collecting and repurposing vintage items since the day got married. While they loved to decorate their home with interesting and unique pieces, they struggled to find a local store that suited their tastes. “The kinds of stores that we liked to shop in didn’t exist around here,” said Meaghan. So they started one. After generating a very positive response running a small vintage shop out of their garage, they decided to open Oliver and Rust at 137 Hwy 20 East, next to the animal hospital in Fonthill. The store looks to fill a niche that she and her husband feel was being neglected by other shops in the region. “The business islike an extension of our home,” she said. “People are really responding well to the vintage items and other unique merchandise.”The store’s products change month to month, depending on what the couple find on their collecting expeditions. Those expeditions take them far and wide to find the perfect pieces for their store. “The vintage products we get from all over Ontario,” said Meaghan. “We visit flea markets, yard sales, and that sort of thing. We also make a number of big road trips a couple of times a year down to the states.”The business is mainly a vintage and home décor lifestyle store. “It has anything you could want to make your home unique, and maybe a little bit eclectic,” said Meaghan. “We work hard to find things that you won’t see at the big box stores, things that someone would really want to see in their home to give it a sense of individuality.”The store has quickly gained popularity among local residents, and even among customers from out of town. On opening day Meaghan dealt with clients from all over the region, as well as Toronto, Hamilton, and Brantford. They are aiming to become a destination, and not just another store. “People are starting to go out of their way to come here,” said Meaghan. “I think customers are very excited about the distinctive quality of our product.”
