News vs. Promotion
News outlets—especially community newspapers—are often approached by businesses and other organizations for help in publicizing an event or service.
Newspapers depend on promotional revenue to survive. In fact, newspapers are actually in the promotion business. Their business model depends on selling promotion (known as advertising) to support their news-gathering operation.
No company can afford to give away its product or service and expect to remain in business for very long. This is why the Voice, like many newspapers, does not generally run “news releases” from businesses or other organizations looking for gratis visibility.
Readers trust legitimate news organizations not to mislead them by running promotional material as news. Ironically, that’s why it can be so desirable to get an article in a newspaper regarding an event or product—established media organizations confer unmatched credibility that social media, in particular, does not.
