Fonthill man killed in collision

On Monday, police requested the assistance of the public in locating 70-year-old Mike Georgiev, who was reported missing by his family members.

Police followed up leads and concentrated their search in the Port Colborne where a uniform officer observed tire tracks that lead off the roadway and into a ditch that was covered by thick brush near Babion Rd. in Port Colborne. The officer followed these tracks and located a single motor vehicle that could not be seen from the roadway.

Further investigation revealed that the driver of this motor vehicle was the missing person, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police revealed that the 2002 Honda motor vehicle was being driven north bound on Babion Rd., when the driver lost control and left the east side of the gravel road coming to rest in the ditch.

This collision remains under investigation by detectives of the Niagara Regional Police Services Collision Reconstruction Unit. Any witnesses with information regarding this collision are asked to contact investigators at 905-688-4111, extension 5500.
