Niagara’s newest community hub opened this weekend with the work of local artist Mathew Vizbulis showcased.
Vizbulis teamed up with Hub founder David Clow to produce an original mural piece that greets visitors entering the co-working space. Other pieces can be seen throughout the centre.
“It was great teaming up with Mathew to add some colour to the space,” Clow said at the opening Saturday night in the Mew Plaza in downtown Welland. “This entire project manifested around a similar need of a space to create, and that’s what has happened with this area.”
Clow, a filmmaker by trade, saw challenges in the gap of others helping others. The Hub strives to fill the gap using professional equipment and the simple action of helping others.
“We want this space to help people make money in jobs they are actually passionate about. It’s not just about coming up with new business models, it’s about a need for new ways of doing business, and that is what this place will be.”
Vizbulis was happy to help with the opening – creating the large mural using Graffuturism.
“It’s very different. The idea of grafuturism as common chaos with accurate structure allows you to figure it out and maybe even create your own idea. It’s much like a book where every reader may have a different experience.”
It would be inappropriate to call it graffiti as it comes in a completely different environment, he said.
“The words graffiti come with a negative image. History would tell you it’s outdoors, vandalism and inappropriate, but it’s so much more.”
Vizbulis hopes artists will use the co-working space not only for networking, but to also create inside the controlled environment.
“To think that the children who are spray painting the community are carrying a message of urban decay is ridiculous.
“They are the future and that’s challenging to adapt.”
